What makes a hero is not an act later on, after thoughtful reflection. What made a new class of American heroes is the instant refusal of members of the jury pool last week to serve on a case on which Aaron Persky is the judge. What would be the point of giving their attention and intelligence to a case in which the judge himself would pervert the course of justice. I admire them more than I can say. And don't even talk about some sort of sanctions against them for refusing! Can you image the legal help they would get?
