"Beijing Tries to Clear Its Notoriously Dirty Air — of Cigarette Smoke." What about Japan?

In 1989 the flights between San Francisco Tokyo offered non-smoking. I have forgotten which way it worked, but either left or right of the middle aisle was smoking and the other side was nonsmoking. Survivors were met with tobacco saturated cabs and smoking drivers.

I have not been to St. Louis on TWA in many years because I assume the TWA terminal still has not a single corner not filled with smoke. True?
