Box for Berkshire Athenaeum--Melville's Search for an Aesthetic Credo--

The information here proved one of the most exciting chapters (to write) in my second volume. The folders here might also prove one of the most stimulating boxes for future research. What is here will be supplemented by other discoveries. But it was the first time anyone had tried to read along with Melville early in 1862 and to trace the progress of his thought about aesthetic issues. Scott Norsworthy contributed a notable discovery.
