Mr. Glenn was a tall man standing about six foot six who tended to grow up but not out. During his youth he had joined the Texas Rangers. At his first roll call, the company formed a line with Sam easily topping the tallest. The captain sighted down the line.
"Sergeant," he shouted, "tell that new man to get down off that stump."
The Sergeant walked down to Sam, looked him over and reported to the captain.
"Sir," he said, "he's not on a stump, he's standing in a hole."
