Revised comment, after Sunday SLO paper has arrived. DA Profanes the word Sanctuary

Our sheriff (for whom I voted, the first time) was recently recorded giving a talk tailored to Trumpists. Now the District attorney Dan Dow makes up to extreme MAGA folks who do not believe in science. Dow seizes on a word associated with terrified people fearing death by a mob of thugs (whether or not the thugs are under the cloak of legal authority).  The noble word is “Sanctuary.” It strikes me that Dow is profaning the word when he does not apply it to a house of worship that might protect a victim of extremists. No, he applies it to extreme right-wing militants who refuse to obey the orders of a governor which are for everyone’s protection. These people have a new God, the one who calls himself “the chosen one.” So Dow under the cover of respect for religion wants these worshipers to feel free to hug everyone, lean on their neighbors, sing in neighbors’ faces, laugh, and pray loudly-- thereby spreading the coronavirus freely to everyone in the church. Then they will go out, defiantly maskless, to encounter their victims in supermarkets and liquor stores, whatever is open.  Dow strikes me as playing to what has become, I hesitate to say it, a new hate group, right-wing racist Evangelicals.  This pains me, for I am so old I remember when Evangelicals were Christians.  Some of the kindest, most loving people I ever knew were Evangelicals. In using a historically powerful word like “Sanctuary” Dow seems about as cynically irreligious as POTUS using military and paramilitary thugs to storm through peaceful protestors (who were remembering a murdered black man) in order for him to be photographed awkwardly standing before a church holding up an unfamiliar book, a Bible.  Our Governor Gavin Newsom respects science, and his attempts to protect Californians ought to be obeyed and enforced by any sheriff or district attorney.
