There is a report that instead of heading to the gold fields cousin Tom first went north to Humboldt. Wells Fargo (try getting a live person at a Wells Fargo number) in its Wiltsee Collection 122, item 731, has a letter J. Martin wrote to Cousin Tom on 26 January 1853 in Elk Hill and mailed to him in Sonora from Bucksport, 3 February 1853. I am asking them to open up the page and tell me the contents of the letter. (It's in a single sheet, folded, not an envelope.)
