The Fear of Bowers that Kept this "Distinguished" Piece out of Print for 6 Years--See in January THE REVIEWING OF SCHOLARLY EDITIONS
So I had the "right" to express my views but almost no place to express them. Edna Steeves is my heroine. 6 years is a long time to wait, but the longest wait was two decades for the MAGGIE article to be printed.
Fredson Bowers was ferocious with threats of lawsuits against writers of reviews, editors of journals, the CEAA if it went against his wishes, and even, in one threat, the MLA. Most people cowered when he threatened. Edna Steeves did not.
