Crystal Mangum, Richard Brodhead, and Lawsuits

It has been claimed that newspaper reporters in Durham, North Carolina, knew that the woman who falsely accused lacrosse players of rape back in 2006 had been a prostitute. Some cautious man has pointed out that even though Mangum is not in jail for murder she was never charged with prostitution because she did not work from street-corners. She might find a way of suing anyone who called her a prostitute instead of an escort.
This exchange shakes me to the core.
Does it mean I have to stop calling Richard Brodhead (who defamed me in the New York TIMES) a critic and start calling him a scholar?
