Leon Howard November 8, 1903-December 21, 1982

While he was at UCLA Leon had more friends than any other academic in southern California. He had, for instance, dear friends at Pomona and at San Fernando State College, as it was then--Northridge. After he retired from his ocean-view Spanish castle in Brentwood and settled in Albuquerque, he would return for visits needing venues big enough. He would send me a list of guests and send Leo Lemay another (overlapping) one and play honored visitor in both. We were honored to receive him and his array of friends. Leo and Ann are dead and so very many of the guests are dead. I just heard from his daughter in New Zealand last week after many years. She was surprised I was alive. So a few still remember Leon and honor him. November 8.
