This week I read A. O. Scott's June 2013 New York TIMES review of Whedon's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Scott felt just the way we did, so we watched it again, the fourth time.
It's a miracle, that movie. I know this man has a big TV career, but can't one of his friends get him in a tight corner and make him agree to do MEASURE FOR MEASURE? The only one available is ludicrous, and Whedon could bring it off.
I felt that Trevor Nunn's MERCHANT OF VENICE was definitive, but how often can you bring yourself to watch that play?
This is the only production of MUCH ADO I have seen that lets you stop hating Claudio. That's a triumph.
