Buchan, T. E. Lawrence, Herman Melville, and Sendak

MEMORY-HOLD-THE-DOOR for intermittent reading, seeing again Buchan on Lawrence's turning up "at any time of the day or night on his motor-cycle Boanerges." Reminded of telling Sendak about young Stanwix's misunderstand his father when Melville told him that he was driving like Jehu. Instantaneously Sendak visualized the scene--the skin of the face blown back against the skull by the velocity. When someone who thinks like that disappears from your life you are diminished all the rest of your life.

  1. Ah, interpreting Melville through Parker through Sendak. Thanks for the smile.
