One of the two or three articles I am proudest of, although it has seldom been cited by Jameseans. I so strongly wanted to write it that I took the great risk of breaking away from the Melville biography, knowing that I might not be able to return and complete it. This is a loving tribute to the man I would happily have spent my career working on, had things been different.
