Rise in women seeking procedures to avoid 'camel toe' in yoga pants

Before Veronica R. went under the knife for a labiaplasty procedure, the 28-year-old Manhattanite joked around with plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Swift about the anticipated results.
“Make me look like Barbie!” she told him, with a laugh.
The striking model, who asked for her last name not to be used for professional reasons, underwent the surgery in September, because she was self-conscious about the size of the labia minora (inner lips) of her vagina.
She is among a growing number of women signing up for labiaplasty to reduce the size and “enhance the appearance” of their private parts, especially when they’re wearing tight-fitting clothes such as workout gear.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery (ASAPS,) there has been a significant increase in the number of these tissue removal and restructuring procedures — an astonishing 48 percent rise in 2014 from 2013.
“More women are pursuing labiaplasty to correct labia-related issues that are interfering with their ability to perform sexually, to perform daily tasks such as exercise, or are merely causing discomfort,” says Dr. Michael Edwards of ASAPS.

Once a Tubercular, always a Tubercular--And it's been on my Mind Lately

Thinking about Joe, who found his when I did in 1955 and went to the same warehouse lockup I did and died of it in 1960. Thinking about the one-hour PBS show on the Plague. Thinking about hearing Johnny Cash in a sanatorium at the end of 1955 singing about those rich people on those dining cars who keep on moving, and that's what tortured him. [Official Cash site said that was an erroneous memory. I did not really connect the song to doctors poking their heads in and racing on! It was not released yet! Oh, I remembered. It was released early in the Bay Area to at least a few stations.] Thinking about playing the lead in THE MALE ANIMAL while air was sloshing around from pneumo-peritoneum. Thinking about streptomycin and thinking about the first test for AIDS and the first effective drugs.

Even Skip Gates's Self-Justification contains a lie--about Mrs Affleck as a Freedom Rider.

Gates released a statement defending the decision, which is below in full:
The mission of “Finding Your Roots” is to find and share interesting stories from our celebrity guests’ ancestries and use those stories to unlock new ways to learn about our past. We are very grateful to all of our guests for allowing us into their personal lives and have told hundreds of stories in this series including many about slave ancestors—never shying away from chapters of a family’s past that might be unpleasant.
Ultimately, I maintain editorial control on all of my projects and, with my producers, decide what will make for the most compelling program. In the case of Mr. Affleck — we focused on what we felt were the most interesting aspects of his ancestry—including a Revolutionary War ancestor, a 3rd great–grandfather who was an occult enthusiast, and his mother who marched for Civil Rights during the Freedom Summer of 1964.

HOW SKIP GATES BUTTERS UP A MAGASTAR: FALSELY SAYS AFFLECK'S MOTHER WAS A 1964 FREEDOM RIDER

Henry Louis Gates's fawning, slavering, unctious bootlicking may have offended Ben Affleck. It offends anyone with a sense of honor, starting with real veterans of Freedom Rides. Ben Affleck's mother can only have been humiliated by false glorification which she did not need: she was already an admirable woman. What do you make of a Harvard Professor who abases himself with lies to flatter a movie star? Well, not one PBS should have retained. Now PBS prostitutes itself and betrays all the people who have sent money to PBS over the years.  The decision to renew Gates as master of ceremonies, even with watchdogs to make him more nearly honest, was suicidal of PBS. Better they should have renewed with Brian Williams.

Daniel Nussbaum
PBS documentary Finding Your Roots, already under internal review over claims it censored information about Ben Affleck’s slave-owning ancestors out of a recent episode, has again come under fire for inaccuracies after Affleck’s mother denied she was ever involved in the 1964 Freedom Summer.
In Affleck’s segment on the ancestry-themed documentary program, host Henry Louis Gates Jr. tells the actor that his mother, Chris Boldt, was an activist involved in Freedom Summer, the historic voter-registration drive among Mississippi’s African-American community in 1964.
Promotional materials for Affleck’s episode on the PBS website included the line: “Ben Affleck’s mother was a Freedom Rider in 1964.”
“A lynch mob made up of members of the Klan and the local sheriff’s department pulled over three of Ben’s mom’s fellow activists,” Gates tells Affleck on the program. “This is not some abstract threat. The Klan actually murdered these three Freedom Riders. And your mother was there at that time.”
Chris Affleck, now 72, told the Daily Mail this week that her “heart was with” the Freedom Riders, but that she was never a member of the group. According to the outlet, Mrs. Affleck was not even in the South in 1964, but one year later instead.
“I supported what they did,” she told the Mail. “People have incorrectly said I was a member, which embarrasses me because I wasn’t as good as they were.”
PBS announced this week that it would conduct an “internal review” to ensure the network did not violate its editorial guidelines. In a statement to Breitbart News on Friday, PBS said the network is “still conducting our internal review. We will share findings once it is concluded.”
PBS, Gates, and Affleck came under fire last week after a leaked email exchange between Gates and Sony CEO Michael Lynton revealed that Affleck had asked Gates to censor information about a slave-owning ancestor out of the program.
Affleck apologized this week on social media for requesting the edit, saying he was “embarrassed” and that he regretted his “initial thoughts that the issue of slavery not be included in the story.”
Affleck’s mother told the Mail that her son’s apology made her “proud.”
“I wasn’t surprised to find that my family had used black people as slaves,” Mrs. Affleck told the outlet. “It makes sense. It was all on my side of the family because my parents were from Georgia and Mississippi and many rich white people from southern states would use people in this way.”
“I know in my heart that it was wrong, but I had no exact knowledge until now,” she added. “But I am not surprised or shocked, although it doesn’t make you feel good at all.”
In a statement issued shortly after the exchange became public, Gates still apparently believed that Affleck’s mother was a Freedom Rider.
“Ultimately, I maintain editorial control on all of my projects and, with my producers, decide what will make for the most compelling program,” Gates said. “In the case of Mr. Affleck – we focused on what we felt were the most interesting aspects of his ancestry – including a Revolutionary War ancestor, a 3rd great-grandfather who was an occult enthusiast, and his mother who marched for Civil Rights during the Freedom Summer of 1964.”
In the original transcript of Affleck’s segment on the program, obtained by Gawker, Gates tells Affleck it’s “cool” that the actor’s mother “went back fighting for the rights of black people in Mississippi, 100 years later. That’s amazing.”
On Wednesday, Affleck revealed the name of his slave-owning great-grandfather on Twitter: Benjamin Cole, who reportedly owned 25 slaves as the wealthy sheriff of Savannah, Georgia.

HEADLINES: "BEN AFFLECK SCANDAL"--NO! The "SKIP GATES SCANDAL"

THE HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR., SCANDAL

The headlines yesterday and today are all wrong with their variations of "Ben Affleck Scandal" and "Ben Affleck Controversy."

There was no Ben Affleck scandal. One headline say "No thanks to Ben Affleck?" How about "No thanks to Skip Gates"?  Affleck just wanted his way as he is used to getting it. What's a megastar (Skip's awed term) to do but act like a megastar?

Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the emails show, consciously betrayed the trust PBS had put in him and betrayed the trust that his watchers had put in him. He was sucking up to the "megastar" in the hope of getting Affleck to muscle him into the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is a suckup and a user, the emails show, and he has no sense of honor about genealogical research. My heavens, when you are researching your ancestry you find what you find! And you deal with it. Did I want to believe I was a Gregory, that family with 7 sons in the Revolution, as one marriage record seemed to show? Oh, yes, but you go looking for more evidence. The whole point is to go with whatever evidence you find and if you don't find anything conclusive, then admit it.

Maybe Gates did not do much of the genealogical work himself and just does not understand. Maybe PBS should get Brian Williams to host the show. Then we would be forewarned that what we are seeing is an MC, a host of an unreality show. This decision of PBS was an insult to the best of its audience. It will lose some of its audience, for sure. And the world does not seem to realize where the scandal lies.

Poisonous Yellow-Bellied Sea Snake Heading Toward San Francisco--No Such Thing as Global Warming

OXNARD, Calif. -- A poisonous sea snake last seen in Southern California 30 years ago has shown up again.
The group Heal the Bay says a 2-foot-long yellow-bellied sea snake was found on the sand Friday at Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard in Ventura County. But it died a short time later.
Local resident Anna Iker snapped a photo of the snake while watching her kids play in the water, CBS Los Angeles reported. It's one of two seen in the area this week.
"I was really shocked because we don't even see land snakes around our neighborhood," Iker said.
The black-and-yellow snake, which is common south of the border, may have been drawn north by warmer ocean temperatures attributed to the El Nino condition.
Experts say it's highly venomous, but it is unlikely to attack unless grabbed or otherwise molested.
The Los Angeles Times says the body was sent to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, where it was examined Saturday and samples were taken for DNA analysis.

A few years ago all we had to worry about was a bear wandering down Morro Creek to the ocean. We were careful to stay away from the water if there were Shark Sighting notices out. Now, yellow-bellied black poisonous sea snakes coiling in the kelp  . . . .

AN APPALLINGLY BAD BOOK ON A GREAT SUBJECT--Molly Guptill Manning on the American Services Editions

This book is on a great topic, but it is the worst book I have ever not been able to read. Anyone teaching how to write elegantly could use it as a textbook for unspeakable and unspeakably bad opening sentences of paragraphs.

I select this from p. 124:
"Servicemen were sexually frustrated, but the idea of providing that catered to such books prurient interests flustered some of the council's staff."

I waive the possibility that only 82.4% of servicemen were sexually frustrated (Molly Guptill Manning knows so many things at others are uncertain of) and just ask you to read the words quoted.

What a shame that Paula Rabinowitz's excellent AMERICAN PULP came out the same year as Manning's WHEN BOOKS WENT TO WAR. Rabinowitz is a real writer, and her book deftly puts the American Service Editions in relation to the larger topic of American pulp.

I can't resist giving further samples from p. 80.

"One of the most remarkable aspects of the council's ASE endeavor was that it set broad benchmarks and worked to avoid censorship of the soldiers' reading. . . . When Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage (a western whose heroine befriends gunslinging cowboys who urge her to break away from the evils of the Mormon Church) was on the verge of being printed, a reader objected to it because of its 'bitter attack on the Mormons.'"

Has Manning read any novel she writes about, one wonders? Read with understanding?

Even in the expurgated version available until recently, The Riders of the Purple Sage deserved much better that Manning's flippant dismissive summary. Did she read any of the novels she writes about? I wonder again.

GOOD TO KNOW!!

I should have saved my letter to Dear Abby on Sending Children into West Virginia Smoke

It's the poison, first, the poison of smoke that Abby wants to send  the children of "Hater of Smoking" into. But Good Lord, Abby, you are talking about West Virginia!

Speaking as a Southerner, let me point out that when you send children into a smoking home in West VA you not only poison their bodies you poison their minds.

In the house of smokers in West Virginia you will not find only an ashtray or two in a well ventilated room or the back porch. Chances are (these are smokers) you find obesity, liquor (lots of booze sitting out), OxyContin, meth, maybe, guns (available in unlocked drawers and on easily-reached gun racks [where is the red cedar one I made in shop?]) hatred of gays, hatred of Hillary, hatred of that Jew Sanders, hatred of blacks [I'm betting the writer is white], disgust at grasping American Indians, fear of immigrants from Mexico and jealousy of them, love of the great public employee Kim Davis, murderous feelings toward Caitlin, all that as well as incredibly befouled air which has been damaging the cute little cousins from the time they were conceived.

The worst night of my life was in Charleston--not Charleston SC but Charleston W VA, were the cloth motel headboard was saturated with tobacco . . . . That headboard symbolizes West Virginia still. If there are smoking houses in West Virginia which don't fit any of my stereotyping, let me know.

Been musing about the Heat Wobblies the other day

Who did I think I was, going along the peak of the dunes? Of course, it meant constantly sliding down to the lowest levels of the dunes and climbing back up the slippery sand. And I was wearing my usual knit hat. How can you get a size 8 knit cap? And a thin one? And I was carrying trash I picked up. Hey, I chased down a rabbit in an open field one time, and caught it, and never thought once about tularemia. That was in the 1940s. At 80 do you have to think about overexertion? I sure did not like not knowing how to put a foot down and what might happen if I didn't. But it went away after 3 hours or so. It wasn't as if I were trying to start running in the dunes again, I was just going about my business during the new Global Warming on a day when there was no beach because of the waves . . . .
